Grief & Loss Poems
1.
A Heart of Gold
A heart of gold
Stopped beating,
Two willing hands at rest,
God broke our hearts
To prove to us
He only takes the best.
2.
I Thought of You
I thought of you with love today,
But that is nothing new.
I thought about you yesterday,
And days before that too.
I think of you in silence,
I often speak your name.
All I have are memories
And your picture in a frame.
Your memory
Is my keepsake,
With which
I’ll never part.
God has you
In His keeping.
I have you in my heart.
3.
A Prayer For Understanding
“Dear Lord as we now gather near
To mourn the one we love
Bestow Your understanding here
Your peace from up above.
Please heal our hearts, it hurts so much
That we must say goodbye.
Support us through these dark, sad hours
As we remember, grieve and cry.
Although we cannot understand
We pray we’ll someday know
Why you took _______ from us
Back to your heavenly home.
Give us Your Strength
And help us through
The days and years to come
May sweet mem’ries warm our hearts and minds
Like golden rays of sun.
Please let _____ stay close nearby
To watch over us we plead
A Guardian Angel’s support from Heaven
Whenever we have need….”
4.
We’ll Remember You
We’ll remember you in sunshine
It’s rays warming earth and sky
We’ll remember you in bird’s graceful wings
As they glide and flutter by.
We’ll remember you in the summer breeze
And in softly falling rain.
We’ll remember you in dark storm clouds
The rainbow’s picture frame.
We’ll remember you in blossoms and fields
And in gentle streams that flow
We’ll remember you in all the lives
All that brings life…that grows.
We’ll remember you in the mountains
When golden leaves fall at our feet
We’ll remember you when glowing sunsets
Cast sparkling embers on the beach.
We’ll remember you in Christmas light
Glimmering bright with joy and hope….
5.
I’m Free
Don’t mourn for me, I’m free
The struggle is finally finished
My spirit’s free, my body’s at rest
Yet I am not diminished.
I’m simply moved to that heavenly phase
Of God’s almighty plan
Having completed the trials of life
In heaven’s peace in where I stand.
Untouched by the pain that assailed my body
Unaffected by the illness’ rage
Grateful that the struggle is finally over
What I’ve moved beyond such a difficult stage.
Now surrounded by my loved ones who’ve passed
Being reunited with them
Watching over you with deepest love and affection
From the serenity and peace found in Heaven.
And I am grateful for the love that deepened
As you patiently cared for me
Love so strong…I didn’t think it could be expanded
Yet it grew more tender ‘midst such suffering and grief….
6.
Angels Walk
Angels walk
Besides us
Across the stepping stones
Of life.
7.
Laughter
Laughter came so easy,
To someone with your smile.
I was lucky to have known you
And loved you for a while.
I borrowed you from heaven,
Now you must return,
Of all the lessons in my life,
This is the hardest one to learn.
8.
For a Father /Mother/Grandparent…
A father lies in peaceful sleep,
His earthly cares are o’er;
And we who are left to mourn him,
Will see him smile no more.
But he is not gone forever,
We shall meet him once again;
In the cloudless land with God above,
Where happiness knows no end.
We need not weep or shed a tear,
For the days are near at hand;
When we again will see him,
In that ever-promised land.
9.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him shall have eternal life.
10.
23rd Psalm
The Lord is my Shepard; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
11.
Stairway
If tears could build a stairway
And memories a lane,
I’d walk right up to heaven,
And bring you home again.
12.
Once Upon a Lifetime
Our hearts still ache in sadness,
And secret tears still flow,
What it meant to lose you,
No on will ever know.
Two smiling eyes are sleeping,
Two busy hands are still.
The one we loved so deeply
Is resting at God’s will.
May he always walk in sunshine, God’s
Love around his glow.
For all the happiness he gave us only
A few will ever know.
It broke our hearts to lose him, but he
Did not go alone.
For part of us went with him
The day God called him home.
13.
“A butterfly perched on my check, Brought hope that it would stay, But with a gently breathless kiss, too soon it flew away.”
14.
"Afterglow"
“I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one. I’d like to leave an Afterglow of smiles when day is done. I’d like to leave an echo…whispering softly down the ways of happy times and laughing times and bright sunny days. I’d like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun of happy memories that I leave behind when day is done.”
5.
"Autumn Rain"
“Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints upon the snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gently autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am that swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft star that shines at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die.”
16.
"Taps"
“Day is done, gone the sun, From the hills, from the sky, all is well, safely rest, safely rest. All is well, fading light; dims the sight, and a star gems the sky, gleaming bright from afar, drawing nigh, falls the night. Dear one, rest!”
17.
"Safely Home"
I am home in heaven, dear ones. OH, so happy and so bright! There is a perfect joy and beauty in the everlasting light. All the pain and grief is over, every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, safely home in heaven at last. There is work still waiting for you, so you must not idly stand, do it now, while life remaineth—you shall rest in God’s own land. When that work is all completed, he will gently call you Home; Oh, the rapture of that meeting, Oh, the joy to see you come!
18.
"When I Must Leave You"
When I must leave you for a little while; please do not grieve and shed wild tears. And hug your sorrow to you through the years. But start out bravely with a gallant smile; and for my sake and in my name live on and do all things the same, Feed not your loneliness on empty days; but fill each waking hour in useful ways. Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer, and I will turn will comfort you and hold you near. And never, never be afraid it die, for I am waiting for you in the sky.
19.
"You are not forgotten"
You are not forgotten, loved one; nor will you ever be. As long as life and memory last, we will remember thee. We miss you now, our hearts are sore, as time goes by we’ll miss you more. Your living smile, your gently face, no one can fill your eternal place.
20.
Don’t go away
Those we love
Don’t go away,
They walk beside us every day,
Unseen, unheard,
But always near,
So loved, so missed,
So very dear.
21.
No Farewell
No farewell words were spoken,
No time to say goodbye,
You were gone before we knew it,
And only God knows why.
22.
Not Forgotten
Gone, yet no forgotten
Although we are apart,
Your spirit lives within me,
Forever in my heart.
23.
Heartache
Our hearts still ache in sadness,
And secret tears still flow,
What it meant to lose you,
No one will ever know.
